An Analysis of 18,087 WordPress.org Plugins

A few days ago I started brainstorming some ideas for my first WordPress plugin. After going back and forth with some options, I decided to see if there is some public plugin data that I could use in my research. And what better source than the official WordPress.org plugin repository?

My first roadblock was a weird WordPress.org website issue in the Plugins section: there is no easy way to access a list of the Latest/Newest plugins that were added to the repository. You can do it for Themes, but not for Plugins.

On the main Plugins page, you can see a list of Block-Enabled Plugins, Featured Plugins, Beta Plugins and Popular Plugins, but no Latest Plugins block. No worries though, a minor issue like this won’t stop us.

All these pages have the URL in the form of https://wordpress.org/plugins/browse/[blocks|featured|beta|popular]/. All we have to do is manually type in the URL https://wordpress.org/plugins/browse/new/, so now we can see the most recent plugins and how well they are doing.

Using Public WordPress.org Plugin Data

I decided to go through some existing WordPress.org plugins and see if I could spot some common characteristics of popular plugins. Some plugin stats are publicly available, so maybe there is something useful there.

For example let’s take a look at the Social Icons Widget by WPZOOM plugin.

The data that we could use for our brainstorming session is:

  • Last updated;
  • Active installations;
  • Ratings – total number of reviews and the average rating score (1 to 5 stars);
  • Support – total number of support threads in the forum.

With this in mind, I created a small PHP script that would gather and parse this public data. With my script ready, I decided to analyze all plugins that were added to the directory in the past 36 months (2016/04/15 – 2019/04/15).

Maybe the results of my findings can be useful to other developers, so let’s get on with it.

WordPress.org Plugin Stats

I have decided to exclude from my stats the plugins that were published in the last 14 days, as most of them have no objective data.

I will be looking at: plugin active installations, total number of downloads, number of ratings, number of support threads (in the last 2 months). At the end of the article I have a list of 100 most used words in plugin names, so those keywords could be worth looking into.

Dear WordPress community, have we lost our collective sanity?

15 Comments

  1. Before you ask: some popular WordPress plugins (Yoast, Jetpack, Akismet) are not on the list because they were not published in the last 36 months.

  2. If you’re looking for plugin opportunities, you might try searching for plugins with the most active installs that haven’t been updated in 12 or more months.

  3. Interesting data!

    I see a lot of plugins related to page builders (Elementor) and WooCommerce.

    Thanks for publishing the data. Would you mind sharing the script?

    • My script was very quickly assembled for a smaller scope, with not a lot of optimization and sanity.
      So I don’t think it would be worth much sharing it, I wouldn’t be proud of putting it out there 🙂
      It gets the job done though.

  4. Can you share the database where you pulled all the data above?Thanks

  5. Hi
    Is this correct data? I do have 23 plugins https://profiles.wordpress.org/vinoth06/#content-plugins

    But it’s not listed here.

  6. Have you decide finally what plugin to develop after this perfect brainstorm?

  7. I find it very interesting that so many plugins have not been maintained. I’m not a programmer but I have to wonder if it’s really that hard to make sure you work stays current?

    One of the fields I look at very strongly these days is the “tested up to” field. Can your data filter on that field and provide, what is essentially, a “current compatibility” report?

    And now a question simple of curiosity. If you expanded the database to all plugins, created from the beginnings of WP, how many are there?

    Thanks for this interesting look behind the repository.

    • Hey Mark,
      You don’t have to ask me about the total number of plugins, this number is available directly on the homepage of the Plugins section:

      Currently it says: “Extend your WordPress experience with 55,156 plugins.”

  8. Wow. One of the most resourceful WordPress contents in 2019. Specially for a WordPress Marketer like me, this data will be extremely useful. Thanks, Dumitru.

    Also, it’s good to see our Essential Addons for Elementor on top of the most lists. 😀

  9. Good work Dumitru.

    Point of interest for plugin authors: Highest percentage, 57.13% , of plugins don’t get rated by users. But when users do give rating 28.24%, again highest, give 5 star rating. This means when users rate they tend to give high rating.

    This also means if plugin authors can somehow get their users to rate their plugins they have good chance of getting a high rating.

    Any ideas how plugin authors can persuade more users to rate their plugins ?
